Driving in Crete

Crete is a wonderful place to drive or ride – there is no more varied or scenic set of routes and roads than those traversing the island. If you are interested in spending some more time to explore the island, rather than sitting and relaxing at your sunbed, here is a good alternative! Rent a car and take a road trip!

Having as a starting point Eliros Mare hotel, in Chania, you can take the national road towards Chania town. First stop is Souda. Souda is a town close to Chania and the former municipality of the regional unit. You can visit its natural harbor and drive across the 15km-long bay.

Your following destination could be the town of Chania. As long as you arrive there, stop and explore the Venetian Harbor in a day stroll and lose yourself within secret corners indulging in the most romantic settings. Then, drive towards Falasarna, in the very west side of the island. Falasarna is one of the most famous Cretan destinations for two reasons. Firstly, because of the beautiful beaches and secondly, because of its natural interest. The main beach of Falasarna has been awarded as the “most beautiful beach in Crete” and it is amongst the top 10 best beaches in Europe. For the more adventurous, if you are lucky enough, you will have the chance to ride the waves with your surf!

Talking about beaches, the next must-visit is Elafonisi, another very famous beach in Crete and amongst the top 10 famous beaches worldwide. This place is, literally, a paradise. Calm and beautiful sea and intense colors complete the perfect scenery. Enjoy the light blue water and pick some pink sand as a “souvenir”.

Finally, complete your road trip with a visit to Sfakia, a rustic village that invites you to stop and taste Crete’s local drink “raki”, while you are having small talk with local people who are willing to share with you genuine Cretan experiences.

Well, it is funny to drive in Crete, to explore new places, see this vibrant colors and meet new people. At the end of the day, this is the best way to collect true, Cretan experiences that will feed your holiday-stories!
